This series is focused on abstract photography, specifically pertaining to architecture. The goal wasn’t to find architecture that was purposely abstract, but rather to represent any type of architecture in a way that does not focus on its concrete existence in real space. I am exploring how beauty can be found in the shape and form of things rather than just presenting them as they are.
I chose to focus on architecture, specifically, because I have always found it to be interesting how much thought goes into the design past just the functionality. Not only are buildings made to be used, but they are also made to be pleasing to the eye. I am drawn to the aesthetically pleasing effects that can be made through form but I have realized that I don’t often pay attention to the buildings around me because they have become just a background to my everyday life, being overshadowed by the continuous movement that life demands.
For this series, I sought to notice the things around me, look at them in a different way, and force my perspective to shift, allowing me to focus on beauty rather than purpose. Having my images in black and white forces the shape and form to be the main focus of the image rather than an attempt to understand where those elements might be physically derived from. While the context of place and thing can be important, I don't think it is needed to appreciate the beauty of things in a purely aesthetic sense and, therefore, I don't attempt to make the objects in my images recognizable while also not minding if they might be.
